Wine lovers who crave unique winery experiences as well as unique visual experiences can enjoy a special combination of wine, food, and art at the free "Drinkable Art" Open House featuring Artist-in-Residence Ken Schilling at the Huntington Wine Cellars Tasting Room located within the Front Street Wineries collective at 53 Front Street in Healdsburg, CA, on June 24 and 25, 2006, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Drinkable Art" incorporates the creation of a fine art piece by Schilling inspired by each varietal and vintage produced by Huntington Wine Cellars. The work of art will be created as a result of tasting each wine and then reproduced as part of the label to represent each vintage.

Tens of millions of dollars worth of vintage wine were believed to be destroyed by a relentless fire October 12 at a huge Vallejo, CA, warehouse that was considered one of the most secure places for wineries and individuals to store prized collections.

The three-alarm fire at Wines Central sent plumes of smoke more than 700 feet high that could be seen from miles and could not be controlled by firefighters because the Mare Island building -- which once housed Navy torpedoes -- had steel doors and 3-foot-thick concrete walls and a roof that could not be penetrated.

Now air-quality managers in California's San Joaquin Valley, where nearly two-thirds of domestic wine is produced, are cracking down. By year's end, local officials will propose the nation's first restrictions targeting pollution from winemaking.
