French Declare Wine Ads "Too Sexy"

Although wine consumption in France is dropping, causing some winemakers to destroy their best wines, they still enforce laws prohibiting ads that are "too sexy"--even ones that show actual winemakers holding their own wine. This is the photo they allowed, of winemaker Catherine Gachet.  |
The one rejected as too sexy featured the glass closer to Ms. Gachet's face, with a sultry look on that face. Even the more tame ad would have been forbidden if she were not an actual winemaker; no sexy models are allowed in French wine ads.
The idea behind the law is to cut down on France's alcohol-related deaths. Apparently many of these deaths are caused by overindulgence in the kind of fine sauternes dessert wine made by Ms. Gachet. |
