NOWFE 2009 Grand Tasting Review Part 2: The Wine

[New Orleans]
So now, the answer to the question you've all been asking yourselves: forget the details of the how the Grand Tastings went, how was the wine? The short answer is: voluminous! This year, I counted 150 wineries/importers/distributers in the event program, and each one generally had anywhere from 4 to 12 wines available for tasting. Yep, that's over 1000 individual wines, and each tasting lasts a mere three hours. So if you were able to swig one wine every 10 seconds or so, without any need to walk from table to table, point out the wine you want to taste, converse with the winemaker, etc., then you might be able to taste them all. Unfortunately, the laws of physics, not to mention the laws of human endurance, makes this utterly impossible. Even attending both Grand Tastings, thus effectively doubling the tasting time, I could not have tried even half of the wines on offer. With that in mind, let's see what wines stood out in my book....
Freixenet had plenty of options to try.

The Neglected Senses of Wine-Tasting

[The Pedestrian Wine Drinker]
If you enjoy every sensory aspect of a wine, it's that much more enjoyable. So strive to appreciate wine with all your senses…sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound. Sound is the only one that rarely makes it into a tasting note, because wines generally sound the same as each other. But you should still make sure to appreciate that gleeful gurgle in a pour, that almost inaudible drip of the last drop going into a glass, that faint swish as you twirl a red in need of breath around in your decanter to aerate it better, and for sparkling wines, that delicate hiss of the bubbles streaming to the surface. It will enhance your experience, and prime your ears for the witty conversation or lovely music that will hopefully follow the sounds of wine.

The Miracle of Fermentation

Posted by perle0 on 2007-01-23 12:55:07 (8607 views)

[The Pedestrian Wine Drinker]
In the early days of human existence, food was a daily challenge. When one meal ended, the search for the next was immediately underway. The most reliable form of food preservation, in those days, was eating as much as you could when food was available, in hopes of storing up a bit of fat for the lean times. (Sadly, our instincts remain the same even when the fat storage has become less of a benefit and more of a health hazard.) Food, especially animal products like milk or meat, could be kept for only the shortest period of time before spoiling. Under those circumstances, the constant daily struggle for nourishment kept people occupied pretty much 100% of the time. The few windows--for example, the few hours after gorging on a fresh kill--might be devoted to little luxuries like storytelling or dancing, but then again, they might be devoted to sharpening the spears for the next go-round.

The key to more leisure time--and all the things that leisure time allows, such as invention, culture, art, literature, settlement--rested in two vital developments. First, domestication of animals and cultivation of crops gave humans a more steady, reliable food source. But even that steady food source was subject to the need for long-term storage. If you harvest your grain once a year, you need a way to keep it edible during the rest of the year, or you’re pretty much right back where you started.

NOWFE 2009 Grand Tasting Review Part 1: Overview

[New Orleans]
Once again, the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience was a smashing success. (It doesn't seem too hard to go right with all of that delicious wine and food, but I imagine that it's a lot harder to put together than it looks.) Like last year, the 2009 Grand Tastings were held in the Superdome, and on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon of Memorial Day Weekend. The Superdome makes for a handy venue, since it has parking available for a reasonable fee and plenty of room for the exhibitors. Since the crowds barely fit as it was on Saturday, I think they'll be sticking with the 'Dome for a while, unless somebody has a larger space to offer.

How Climate Change May Alter The Future Of Wine

Posted by Mike P. on 2015-12-17 19:58:59 (8477 views)

[News]
Global warming has its markers, such as melting ice caps and rising sea levels. Its impact on the worlds vineyards is another, lesser known issue. And so its fitting that the COP21 conference on climate change is currently being held in Paris, and that Tuesday’s topic of discussion was agriculture.

"The vine is indeed a perennial plant that allows scientists to make comparisons from one year to another," says Herve Quenol, a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research and a scientist with the International Organization of Vine and Wine. "Also, this plant has well-defined stages of growth that are directly related to temperature, whether its budding, flowering, the formation of clusters or, of course, the harvest. The consequences on these stages have been widely visible for several years."
