Chateau/Producer:Masi
Wine Name:Amarone della Valpolicella
Country:Italy
State:Veneto
AOC:DOC classico
Region:near Verona
Wine Score:88
Notes:I enjoyed this wine a lot. Of course, that might have had something to do with drinking it in a wine bar in Venice. Almost anything might taste good under those circumstances, but as a comparison, I didn't like my companion's wine at all. (He preferred mine as well.)

This wine was very dark in color, although it was hard to tell in the dark bar. The edges were noticeably tawny, however. It had a very rich scent, very heady, of dark fruits like blackberry. The flavor was intense, with a good long finish. It leaned more to the acidic than the tannic, but the tannins lingered through the finish. As the name suggests, there is a bitter note to the flavor, which also had hints of blackberry and raisin. I believe that this was a very decent example of the type.
Tasting Date:2004-10-23
Varietal:70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 5% Molinara
Additional Notes:This winemaker, Masi, collaborates with Seregio Alighieri, a descendent of the poet Dante. They seem to make marketing hay by making the connection whenever possible, so this wine probably doesn't have any of the Dante family's grapes in it. Still, it's an interesting historical note.
