Yes, in case you were wondering when the armageddon would hit, here's a sign that it will soon arrive: seamless dresses created by fermenting wine. The only drawback: for now, you have to keep these garments wet, or they'll tear. That, and they look like they're made from exactly what they're made from: a bacteria-created film found collecting at the top of wine vats.

The Language of Wine

[News]
[USA]
An article in The Capital Times of Madison, WI explores the difficulties of communicating about wine without a truly shared vocabulary. An example:

One of the biggest challenges facing wine drinkers is adequately describing the "texture" or "body" of the wine they enjoy. A wine that's medium-bodied will seem heavy to some drinkers, and light to others. For the sake of convenience, Dahl often equates the body of a specific wine with the way milk feels in the mouth.

"A light-bodied wine will feel like skim milk," she says, "while a medium-bodied wine feel more like two-percent. Wines with a heavier body are more like whole milk."

Nanotechnology Looms: Wine Programming and More

Imagine the wine purchase of the future: you hand over your money (or your credit card, or your bar code tattoo), and receive a bottle of clear, tasteless, odorless liquid. When you're ready to drink it, you program the elements you want in your beverage, and wave your microwave transmitter over the bottle. Instantly, infinitesimallly small nano-capsules filled with a variety of substances release their contents into the water, creating a made-to-order wine with exactly 13.7% alcohol, the flavor of red wine but the color of white (to prevent stains), and the perfect mix of flavors you prefer in wine. They even release substances to create the perfect nose and ratchet up the levels of healthy polyphenols.

Welcome to the brave new world of nanotechnology.

Mmmm....Chicken Wine!

[News]
[India]
Okay, it's not really wine. But it really does have real chicken in it!

To make this Indian traditional "chicken wine," they take a dressed chicken, remove the legs and head, make a slit in the middle and empty out the liver, intestine and the stomach. Ghee and garam masala are stuffed into it before wrapping it a fine cloth. It is then brewed in a special container called Fonshi, which is otherwise used to brew Rakhsi, the local beverage.

Half the container is filled with Janr (millet beer) and tightly closed. The contraption is then heated by placing it on a wooden fire. The Janr evaporates and condenses once it hits the upper part of the Fonshi. The condensed liquid collects inside another vessel called Odhan. This distilled fermented liquid soaks in the chicken and more Janr is added. The chiken wine or Kukhra-ko-Rakshi is ready.

[Spain]
Researchers in Spain have found that exposing grapes to ozone was 90% as effective as sulphur dioxide in preventing decay. This could benefit wine-drinkers who are allergic to the sulphites currently used for this purpose.

Ozone-treated grapes also contained up to four times more antioxidants, the team said in a peer-reviewed article in the Journal of the Science and Food of Agriculture.

With wine consumption steadily rising in the U.S., sports fans are doing their part to support the trend. A study by market researcher Nielsen found wine consumption among U.S. sports fans increased to $81.40 per household in 2006, which was up $14.60 from 2005.

But the increase in wine consumption wasn't evenly distributed across sports. Some sports, it seems, are more wine-friendly than others. Which sports are the wine-drinkingest of them all?

Huge Wine Heist in CA a Sign of the Times?

Posted by perle0 on 2007-02-01 15:24:46 (6547 views)

[News]
[California]
In the affluent Silicon Valley town of Atherton, one of the most wealthiest areas in the country, a single theft of over $100,000' worth of rare and expensive wines taken from a private home has wine-lovers abuzz. Even the New York Times has taken notice.

The thieves ignored electronics, jewelry, and lesser wines to hit the basement wine cellar and zero in on the good stuff: the average value of each stolen bottle was $3000. The haul included a magnum of '59 Petrus with an estimated value of $11,000. Because of their focus on high-value bottles, it's clear that the thieves knew their wine.

United States Drinks Itself Out of Wine Glut

[News]
[USA]
By consuming a record-setting 300 million cases of wine in 2006, U.S. wine-drinkers have helped to remedy a six-year glut of excessive wine supplies. This return to a more normal equilibrium of supply and demand should be good for wine-makers, but could mean slightly higher prices for wine-drinkers.
