Chemicals In Red Wine Get Second Look

[News]
Resveratrol, a chemical found in red wine and dark chocolate, may work differently in the body than first thought, a new study suggests.

"Resveratrol has potential as a therapy for diverse diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease," said lead study author Dr. Jay Chung, chief of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's laboratory of obesity and aging research in Bethseda, Md.

People would need to drink about 667 bottles of red wine to get a meaningful treatment dose of resveratrol, a researcher says.People would need to drink about 667 bottles of red wine to get a meaningful treatment dose of resveratrol, a researcher says.

"However, before researchers can transform resveratrol into a safe and effective medicine, they need to know exactly what it targets in cells," he added in a release.

2011 NOWFE Grand Tasting

Posted by perle0 on 2011-10-16 20:59:10 (12010 views)

[Editorial]
[New Orleans]
Held each Memorial Day weekend, the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience culminates in the two Grand Tasting sessions on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. This year's event was spectacular, as always.

Though these events have been held in the Superdome during the past few years, it was under renovation this year. So the Grand Tastings took place in the Hilton, a very appealing space but perhaps a little small for the crowds who flock to this event. The decor, however, was probably the most successful I've seen yet. Ghostly fabric trees lit from inside with strings of lights formed the centerpieces, and on the periphery, tables with luminescent plastic footing in brilliant colors gave these edges of the scene a lovely glow.

Savanna Samson is a porn star, and a noted one at that. She is the star of 25 sexually explicit films, a two-time winner of the Adult Video News Award for best actress, and her work with Jenna Jameson in "The New Devil in Miss Jones," a remake of a classic, won last year's award for the best all-girl sex scene.

And, she makes wine. Not just any celebrity-label vanity wine, either; Robert Parker has given her wine, a 2004 vintage of an Italian red wine that she calls Sogno Uno (Dream One), a score of 90-91.

The 2010 NOWFE Grand Tastings--A Seafood Delight

[Editorial]
[New Orleans]
Once again, the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience (NOWFE) ended with its big event, the Grand Tastings. With one held Friday night and one Saturday afternoon, they have for the last few years taken place in the Superdome, where there's plenty of room for the massive amounts of wine and food. It's definitely the event of the year for wine-lovers and foodies alike (so often, the two are combined in the same person anyway), and this year was no exception. With hundreds of wines to sample and dishes for tasting from most of New Orleans's finest restaurants, what's not to love?

The cocktail garden area provided some of the much-coveted seating.

What's in a nose? The basics of wine-smelling.

[The Pedestrian Wine Drinker]
Now that you've allowed your eyes to drink in the beauty of the color and general appearance of your glass of wine, it's time to smell it. The how-to part is easy. Take your glass, and gently swirl the wine around inside of it. Try not to slosh it over the edge; this gets easier with practice. (It also teaches you not to fill your wine glass so full, Mr. Oinky.) Stick your nose into the opening of the glass--you can go pretty far and still be appropriate, but remember, the object is to SMELL the wine, not to stuff your entire body into the glass starting with your nose. If it begins to look or feel like the latter, back off a tad. On the other hand, don't sniff daintily several inches above the mouth of the glass. You'll miss most of the hot nasal action.

What's the Deal with Taste, Anyway?

Posted by miles on 2005-02-21 01:21:14 (11211 views)

[The Pedestrian Wine Drinker]
Taste is an interesting sense. In many ways, it's the weakest sense. You can see an almost infinite variety of items, differing in shape, color, degrees of brightness, etc. You can hear a wide range of tones, qualities, and volumes. You can distinguish thousands of smells, and touch includes dimensions such as pressure, pain, and temperature that can combine into sensations as varied as burning your hand on the stove, getting goosebumps, enoying a hot-oil massage, or being scratched by an itchy sweater. And all of these four senses are keeping you actively engaged with the outside world pretty much any time you're awake (and some when you're asleep).

New Study On Wine And Cancer

Posted by Mike P. on 2013-04-09 12:24:34 (11173 views)

[News]
The study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology was led by Polly Newcomb, head of the Cancer Prevention Program at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, Seattle.

Dr Newcomb said: 'Our findings should be reassuring to women who have breast cancer because their past experience consuming alcohol will not impact their survival after diagnosis.

'This study also provides additional support for the beneficial effect of moderate alcohol consumption with respect to cardiovascular disease.'

The study was based on data from almost 23,000 women who participated in the Collaborative Breast Cancer Study, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.

About 5,000 participants were sent a follow-up questionnaire between 1998 and 2001 about their alcohol consumption habits after diagnosis.

A glass of wine a day will NOT affect a woman's chance of beating breast cancer

Modest wine consumption can actually increase chance of survival

Cuts risk of dying from heart disease risk by 15 per cent

But beer or spirits do not have same effect, nor does heavy drinking
