Beer Causes Gout--But Wine Doesn't

Gout, a painful health condition caused by the deposition of uric acid crystals in joints, is often blamed on too much rich food and drink. (In olden times, it plagued particularly noblemen and wealthy merchants.)

However, a recent study showed that wine consumption did not increase blood levels of uric acid.

Beer drinkers, on the other hand, had the highest levels of uric acid in their blood, and those who consumed hard liquor also showed raised levels, although not as high as for beer.

No association was found between wine intake and uric acid levels.

This pattern held true for men and women, and for all categories of body weight. "No association was found with wine intake in any of the subgroups," the investigators report.
