No Castle, No Chateau

[News]
[USA]
Starting in 2006, wines grown in the U.S. will no longer be able to use "chateau" in the name of the wine unless the grapes are grown in sight of a castle. Since castles are a bit scarce in the U.S., they'd better start building now.

The restriction is one of several, part of a US/European Union deal to regulate the transatlantic wine trade. Other European "traditional expressions," such as vintage, noble and classic, will also be banned unless they are true. Existing US wines can still be given European names, such as burgundy, champagne and claret, but new wines will have to be given a US name.

Details.

Goes great with mini onion-burgers!

I don't think Chateau de White Castle will be forthcoming any time soon, though this does beg the question, is the government ready to define 'Castle'. I mean, does it have to have a moat and some kind of stone tower? What if you added a drawbridge and a moat to your farm house, does that work?

Maybe just naming your home a castle is good enough, after all, every man's home should be his castle.

I'm all for defining a 'castle' as "any home built with stone, having a slate or thatched roof and at least one arched opening." That way, you could build a stone dog house and call your home-made wine Chateau de Fido.

Woof! Where can I get me some of that wine? Drinking water 24/7 is getting pretty old, you know.
