Brennan's Wine Cellar a Victim of Katrina

It's official--the world-class wine cellar of famous New Orleans restaurant, Brennan's, is ruined. Consisting of over 35,000 bottles of fine wine, the cellar--winner since 1983 of Wine Spectator magazine's Grand Award--was doomed when Katrina struck.

Brennan's is located in the French Quarter, an area largely spared from the flooding that devastated so much of New Orleans. The European wines were stored on a second floor, as well, even if moderate flood waters had invaded.

No, the enemy here was the extreme heat of the Louisiana summer, still in full blast in September, when highs in the upper 90's were a normal occurance and humidity stayed well above 75%. When the entire city lost power, often for a month or more, temperatures in Brennan's cellar probably reached as high as 120 degrees F. No wine can withstand that kind of heat for long--certainly not for a month or more.

Rare vintages, aged for decades, were lost to the lack of power. Lafitte Rothschild, Chateau Mouton, Chateau Margaux, Petrus...some dating as far back as the 1800's...were among the losses.

There's no word yet on whether Brennan's will eventually be able to rebuild, or when the restaurant will reopen. We certainly hope this New Orleans landmark will survive.
