Chinese wine-makers wanted to highlight a campaign against excessive packaging with a huge "nude run" in the city of Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province on Christmas Eve (now, that's a happy holidays for you). Sadly, local authorities failed to issue a permit for what would have surely been a memorable event. Apparently, they considered the event "immoral." But hey...at least they were going to screen the runners to ensure they were easy on the eyes!

Annual Tre Bicchieri Italian Wine Dinner

Posted by perle0 on 2010-05-16 14:17:24 (8042 views)

[Events]
[New Orleans]
Each year, Swirl Wine Bar & Market celebrates the best of Italy with an Italian wine dinner featuring the highest award-winning wines of the Gambero Rosso Vini d'Italia, those given the "Tre Bicchieri" or 3 Glass designation. Given to less than 300 wines yearly, the Tre Bicchieri award is the highest and most prestigious honor that can be bestowed upon an Italian wine and is highly coveted by producers.

To best present the wines, we choose an Italian restaurant each year that demonstrates the same commitment to superior quality and match these amazing wines with their cuisine. We are excited to hold this year's dinner at Chef Adolfo Garcia and Chef Joshua Smith's southern Italian restaurant, a Mano. Chef Joshua Smith's menu will feature 6 tasting courses paired with 6 wines representing their respective regions. (As these wine are produced in limited quantity,
one 5 oz. glass of wine will accompany each course) Antonio Molesini, Italian Wine Specialist from Republic National Beverage, and a native of Cortona, will join us in hosting the event.

Viva Italia at Long Last

"What’s it all about? Integrity--there simply is no quality in wine without integrity"
–-Jens Schmidt, Owner, Montecastelli Selections

This past summer, Jon and Laurie of Cork & Bottle made a trip to the Montecastelli Wine Fair in Tuscany to find some new discoveries (we know, it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!). Montecastelli is a Tuscan-based company that works with Italian wineries focused on estate-grown wines made organically and biodynamically--in other words, wines that are painfully pure and true to region and type. Although the air conditioning was in short supply, the food was good and the wines were incredible.

Over 40 producers featuring about 300 wines were tasted over three days. The producers were charming (and some of them even spoke English); needless to say, the wines were amazing. Jon and Laurie left the fair just dying to get their new discoveries back to Cork & Bottle, and since July they’ve been waiting for them to show up. Waiting. For nearly 6 months. The good news is that the wines are starting to arrive and the nearly 6-month wait for these new discoveries did nothing to diminish the excitement about them. The following wines are some of the highlights of the trip; they are now in stock in both stores and available for purchase on-line.

Happy Shopping!

Major Study Shows Red Wine Improves Cardiovascular Health

Posted by Mike P. on 2016-01-22 10:55:35 (7804 views)

[News]
A glass of red wine every night may help people with type 2 diabetes manage their cholesterol and cardiac health, according to new findings from a two-year randomized controlled trial (RCT) led by researchers at BGU. Additionally, both red and white wine can improve sugar control, depending on alcohol metabolismgenetic profiling. In this first long-term alcohol study "Effects of Initiating Moderate Alcohol Intake on Cardiometabolic Risk in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes", just published in the prestigious Annals of Internal Medicine, the researchers aimed to assess the effects and safety of initiating moderate alcohol consumption in diabetics, and sought to determine whether the type of wine matters. People with diabetes are more susceptible to developing cardiovascular diseases than the general population and have lower levels of “good” cholesterol. Despite the enormous contribution of observational studies, clinical recommendations for moderate alcohol consumption remain controversial, particularly for people with diabetes, due to lack of long-term, randomized controlled trials, which are the "holy grail" of evidence-based medicine.

Reviewed: The 17th Annual NOWFE Grand Tasting

Posted by perle0 on 2008-05-26 21:41:58 (7346 views)

[New Orleans]
Another year, another awesome Grand Tasting for the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience! This year, the Grand Tasting was held in a huge new venue...the Superdome. The event organizers had tons of extra room to play around with, and it showed in many ways. I can't say if this was the biggest NOWFE Grand Tasting ever, but it sure felt like it!

The Grand Tasting is the culmination of a five-day wine and food blow-out, and this one rose to the very high standards New Orleans has for both wine and food. More than 175 wineries from all over the world were represented, pouring an estimated 1000 wines. 75 of New Orleans' best restaurants provided samples of their finest cuisine, to make sure nobody got too tipsy. (They failed on that account in some cases, but did not fail to provide taste temptations sure to lure attendees to their regular kitchens for more.) In addition, there was constant live music, a Louisiana seafood cook-off of New Orleans' finest chefs, and even Mardi Gras floats and a Second Line parade to close things out.
